Dear Mom Dad and Fam,
It was wonderful talking to all of you on the phone as I flew out. I am in flippin Peru! It is nuts down here. I have so much going through my head. First off when we landed in Peru it was wild. We got off the plane and immediately started to sweat. The air is so bad….it’s almost better not to breath. It smells terrible. We all packed on the bus after customs and drove about 2 hours through 2 solid hours of the city. I could see shacks as far as I could see. It is like Tijuana but worse.
The houses we saw were ridicules. They had no doors, no windows, no roofs, and clotheslines everywhere. We saw lots of rebarb wire and bricks and whatever else. It was so unreal driving through the city. I was sweating so bad on this bus jammed with Elders. It was stop and go traffic and a terrible wild ride. The traffic was city busses with like 100 people on a 20-man bus, mopeds, 3 wheeled cars and bikes. We drove past the temple but it was a lot smaller than it looks.
When we got to the MTC we got new companions. My companion is Elder Millett from Murray. He is really quite, but good. So the CCM is pretty cool. We have full soccer field. I’ve already played twice with the Latinos (That is what they call them). They are so good. They call us the North Americans. It is fun to play. I scored once and then I ran around the field-screaming Goal!!! We have Gym Actividad Fisico everyday. It is fun to play with the Latinos. The CCM is really small but nice, but it is like a prison. It has a 15-foot fence all around. We are on the outskirts of Lima so at night we hear sirens, people yelling and everything. It is kind of crazy! There is no one here in the CCM except the North American’s and the Pres. that speaks English.
It is really different down here. All of the maestros ( teachers) speak Spanish and teach us and ask us questions in Espanol and we just look at each other when he asks us questions. He will stare right at you and read off a paragraph in Espanol. So I just stare right back. It is so awkward and just something else. Can you imagine trying to teach a class about Peru when not one person understands the language? That is how it is all day everyday! Everything is in Spanish. They have an overhead system in the building, but no one goes to the office because no one understands. The teachers and Latinos call me Elder (Row-hairs) or (Rod-hers) hehe. It is awesome. When we play b-ball…. Elder Row-hairs.
There are 97 people total in the entire CCM and about 60+ are Latino’s. They are from Panama, Bolivia, Guatemala, Peru, Chile, and Brazil. I have 6 people in my room 2 are native. We teach them Ingles y ellos ensenamos Espanol, comprende? The Latino are tiny about the size of Kylee girl. Really they are about 5 ft.
The food here is way heavy and lots of meats, chicken, eggs, rice…..heavy stuff!!! Tons of potatoes. I have got to be careful. I feel like I’m pluggin up! They typical meal is rice with potatoes and chicken or beef. It is not what you think the chicken would be on top. They always have soup on the side. It is really different. I can eat it, but I don’t always like it. I never know exactly what it is …fish, lamb, dog, or Alpaca. I just don’t ask what it is. Some of the meats don’t leave a fun filling in your stomach. Lots of the Elders are sick with diarrhea, the newcomer’s bug. They have cereal, but milk is out of the box and it is made with ‘formaldehyde’ …the same stuff they use to preserve bodies---yikes! I remember Kylee girl used to have the smell on her hands after working at the lab. That is what milk smells like here—yuck!
The first day I couldn’t handle eating cow heart so I had cereal. To my pleasant surprise the milk was warm and tasted so gag! It takes some getting used to.
There is no AC in the CCM so I sleep with nothing but G’s and a pillow and just chill. We leave the windows open everywhere. I like it because you can hear the cool birds and tropical things. We are right next to a big jungly mountain. I love to hear the sounds of horns, and animals at night; it makes me dream about finally getting out of here. It is going to be nuts out there, I know!! I’ve seen it.
There are 9 and ½ million people in Lima that is 5 times the pop of Utah. It is like nothing you have ever seen. We saw this neighborhood and it looked like Aladdin houses. They were all crooked and things everywhere. There were people climbing on boards, kids in the dirt and just people everywhere, There will be plenty of people to teach….I’ll tell you what. I can’t understand Latinos. They speak so fast and crazy. It is not always Spanish either sometimes it is Ketchua. Yep it is true. I might be learning Dos idiomas. The Incan language spread from Cusco and all over Lima. Half of the Latinos speak it here!
All I do is sweat the weather is like Mexico. I take a shower then I sweat, sweat all the way back to the room.
President Craige is way strict but cool. He called me in the second day and said he wanted to talk to me. I went into his office and all he said was hey…. I’m calling you to be district leader. Where are you from? Tell me about your family. I said, “St. George’ and my family is the best and my Dad is the Stake President and I’m excited to be here. He said good…. A Stake President’s kid will know exactly what to do, and what I want. I was like what…. And he shook my hand and left. He is always in a hurry and way blunt. He cuts straight to the point! He reminds me of Kelly Smith so much!!! But he is awesome and I’ll do my best. He knows my name and calls me Rogers like a coach. Your tall get over here, even if what he needs isn’t anything to do with height. I gave a talk in church today on knowledge.
It went good! With only 100 people in the CCM, we all know everybody and President Craige knows all of us. I’m not special in any means and don’t want to be I just want to be a regular old hardworking missionary. He always says if you guys think you wanna go home, I’ll kick your but!! He is way scary sometimes. We had a health/orientation the other night and he was saying don’t pull the bad back/knee crap on me. I tell you to suck it up. You get to talk to me if you think your going home first and I bet you won’t want to go when I get done talking with you or something like that . He is cool though J
We also had health orientation, and they were telling us all about the joys of Peru Mission. Absolutely no eating or drinking anywhere but at your pensionistas ( mission mom’s) He told us how to cure ingrown toenails and how to clean fruit with water and Clorox. It all sounds pretty crazy all the stuff they were telling us. I pray everyday for health and safety.
The President is leaving on Sunday and Russell M. Nelson will be here Friday-Sunday to make the change that will be cool. I am excited to see how it all works. We get to go through the Temple on Thursday but I think it is closed in Feb…dang it. We get to go track in Lima on Saturdays from now on. I am so nervous but it should be really interesting. I am getting my Spanish down. Ok…. I can understand tons, I just can’t put together sentences very well yet. I am doing good down here . I am just trying to be humble and always have a prayer in my heart for comfort, peace, safety and the spirit. Mail comes everyday, but only leaves on Monday. Monday is my P-day. I sent out 2 letters today and I get to e-mail you.

E-mail from Peru 1-21-08

1/21/08
Hey everyone family and friends,
It’s been a crazy busy week and so much is going on. First they changed the presidency and President Groberg is the new President, “The Other Side of Heavens” younger brother. Russell M. Nelson came down to Peru to make the change. We all got to shake his hand he gave some really good talks and got me pumped to be the best missionary I can be. I have sent some letters home and they should be there in couple of days. I sent two more fat ones today. They should be there next week. I told lots of info in both so I pray they make it there. I think they will. I received your first letters and they were awesome thanks so much! Its so funto get mail. I haven’t heard anything since, but its ok. I know it takes along time but I’m always writing. Today we went to Interpol, were we go to do allthe paper work to become citizens. It was so fun to go out in town. We went to agas station and looked around and bought Inca cola. It’s so crazy down hereand there are so many people. I almost got hit by some dudes on a bike and the traffic on the way there was insane every man for himself. It was so funbouncein around honkin. There was 3,000 kids from Peru here this week foryouth conference and it was nuts. They all got to hear Elder Nelson andthey were so excited. We had two meetings with Elder Nelson and the MTC/CCM was nuts all weekend. There were cops, busses and it was packed with people and everything. I love when things happen and we get to go outside. We get to go tracking this Saturdayand they say it is way intense. It will be in the way poor part of town. I’ll tell you allabout that. I loved your letters and emails even though I don’t have time toread them all, thanks!!! We go to the temple next. Mom I’m way excited, I loveteaching Latinos. They also teach me. I know tons of Spanish. I never thought Iwould understand better then I speak but that’s a start right. I teach them tongue twisters and they teach me tongue twisters like que pasa calabaza nada nada limonada, and I teach them how much wood can a wood chuck chuck. Hehe…… its so funny let me know when you receive my mail ok. I’m doing great and working hard I feel the spirit so strong. Tell everyone I love them. It’s almost been 5 weeks that is just crazy. It’s the biggest adventure down here being in Peru. I still can’t believe it especially when we walk down the street.:)
My companion is Elder Millett from Murry, Utah. LOVE YOU Elder Rogers

Jon arrives in Peru

Dear mom and dad and everyone else,
I’m alive I made it to Peru. It is just absolutely nuts down here. We got to the airport yesterday and packed on MTC bus and shipped to CCM.. When we first came into Peru we flew over some crazy little shacks right against the coast. Its just slums down here. It looks like a huge Tijuana. It’s wet and hot jungley and lush. We got out of airport and it smelt so bad like a Jacuzzi and fish. It is really mucky and hazy all the time. We packed on to a bus and drove for two hours straight through the city of Lima, out to little nicer area where the CCM is located. The drive made me sick cause the bus driver is crazy there are so many crazy people and the traffic is terrible. The driver was just driving like a mad man. The roundabout’s here are the size of Vernon Worthin Park and the houses we drove by were beat up shacks with literally no roofs or windows it looks pretty rough. The MTC/CCM is really nice. I was made a district leader today for my district. The MTC is good but the food is really grouse but I’m doing well. I love you guys! I’ll write more soon they only gave us five minutes today to say we were alive. I love you family and Kylee Girl and it was awesome talking on the phone. Use the direct mission adress it is faster and you can put in envelope. The address is
Elder Jonathan B. Rogers

Dear Mom and Dad,
Today is my p-day. What a glorious day! Mornings are always a little rough, but by the afternoon I feel pretty good. Things are good here at the MTC. It is about 3 days until we hop on the plane and head out. We fly at 7:30a.m. on Wednesday. I’m as ready as I’m going to be for Peru. I will survive, I will be fine. They have a scale here so I will have the right weight in my bags.
We have a saying here, enjoy the mail while you can. I want you to know that I love you all so much and I have really looked forward to the mail that you have sent me. I also like the stories it has all been so uplifting and encouraging. It feels so good that I have my loved ones at home supporting me. I guess everyone knows that I have been down the first couple of weeks. The MTC isn’t all roses. I want you to know that I have figured things out now. Sometimes I get anxious so I sing and whistle. Other times I get sad so I try and make others laugh. Sometimes I can’t eat so I pray and eat anyways. The spirit of being a missionary lifts me up in the spirit of the Lord. I get excited and I know that I’ll tear it up in the future. On Sunday we had a real good lesson about how some missionaries come in so pumped to go to Brazil and New York or whatever, but they forget about the MTC and that sometimes it isn’t as fun or rewarding as walking up and down the streets and teaching. That is how I feel. Some days I feel like this is retarded. This is not how I pictured my mission. This is what the man’s talk was about and it comforted me. We had about 200 greenies come in on Wed. and I could see the fear in their eyes—hehe. It reminded me of myself 3 weeks ago. They did not know where to go or what to think J. But anyways thanks for the mail-----keep it coming.
I am feeling good and I should be ready to go! I had my whole district singing, “I’m leaving on a Jet Plane” in the shower the other day! Hehe. I try to wake up and eat an apple or something every morning in the shower. It is hard because we eat dinner at 5:30p.m. and then we do not eat until 8:30 A.m. the next morning. That is 14 hrs. later. We go to class from 9-1, 2-5 and 6-9. Sometimes we have gym or service. Gym is fun.
It takes forever to play a b-ball game so my bud and me play 4 square yeah!!! Gay I know! But it is something to do. Everyone is packed in the gym. We make it fun. We laugh so hard cause we make what we call secret combinations. I dominate the game. Elder Ward is my favorite, he is exactly like Jordan Hammer. We have so much fun together.
The other day we were playing and this kid thought he was the bomb; so we gained up on him, and Elder Ward lobbed a ball in my square and I just slammed it. The kid did not know what happened. It was fun.
Tell everyone thanks for all the good letters, Hammers, North’s, and Barbers. I just don’t have time to write to everyone.
Hope you enjoyed this letter and that everything is going good. Please give special thanks to the Ence’s , Clint and kids, Lisha, Ani, Grandma Hafen and of course Kylee girl.
Love your Son—Elder Rogers
Ohh P.S. I have to tell you about my companion, Elder Birdsall from Frisco, Texas. He is a nut. He is just funny and he is really forgetful and does absurd things.
The other night he left the room to use the bathroom at about 2:00a.m. and did not take a key with him. The doofus! So he came back to the room and was locked out. He knocked lightly cause he didn’t want to wake us up he says. ( Duh!!!—how is he going to get back in then?) Well about an hour later of light knocking we still did not answer so he stayed out in the hall all-night and slept on the floor. So in the morning I go to the shower and he is standing outside the door with bloodshot eyes and looking right at me. I’ve told him 36,493 times to carry a key with him all the time. I knew exactly what happened ---hehe. I just looked at him and said laughing “ Top of the morning to ya” hehe
